The Curse of Not Giving: Dead Sea Analogy

The Curse of Not Giving

What happens when we take and take and take without giving anything in return?

We’ve all met someone like that. They have their hands out, want something for nothing and continue to take yet never seem to give.

There have been times where I’ve been like that. Continuing to take without giving and wondering why I’m not making any real progress.

I was reading The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World by the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu and I heard one of the greatest analogies of my life.

Dead Sea Analogy

In the Middle East, there is a large body of water called the Dead Sea. What’s unique about this sea is that it is fed by various rivers and streams, providing it with a continuous flow of fresh water, yet nothing lives in the sea.

It takes and takes, getting a constant flow of water and the reason why nothing can survive is that it doesn’t have any way for water to flow out of it.

It only takes and doesn’t give.

Taking without giving is a sure way of becoming stagnant and contaminating the positive qualities within yourself.

When you find yourself in a difficult place, wondering why things aren’t happening yet people are supporting you, the key may lie in the act of giving.

The Power of Giving

When we talk about giving, we’re not just referring to giving of materials, money or resources.

We can all give of our time, give our energy, kind thoughts, peaceful interactions, and compliments.

Every day we can give something of value and it doesn’t require us to open our wallets.

“Imagine what the world would look like if we took care of each other as if our lives and the lives of our children depended on it?”

3 Ways To Give Unto Others

1 – Giving of Your Time – We have 24 hours each day and can use it any way we choose. One of the most beautiful things we can give to another person is our time. This could be stopping by and talking with someone who is going through a hard time, lending a helping hand for a cause you care about, or volunteering. A small, simple act of giving can open the floodgates of more opportunities and blessings.

2 – Giving Positive Thoughts – The average person has between 50-70 thousand thoughts a day. A simple thing we could all start giving to other people is positive thoughts. We can surround the people we care about with positivity, we can surround strangers with positivity, we can surround the world with positivity. Give some of these empowering thoughts to others today.

3 – Giving of Your Energy – Energy is one of the most valuable inner resources we can give. We can share our energy with others by being there for them, by going out of our way to help someone, or just supporting them. It’s important to know that you must keep your energy in a good place. The last thing you want to do is to give all your energy away and deplete yourself. Be wise.

Give and Receive

Be a part of the flow.

Give and receive.

Peace. Happiness. Compassion. Respect.
