Consuming The Universe: Cherishing Our Food

The Universe is in Each Bite You Eat

Often, I’ve thought of all the things that must happen in order to enjoy the food I eat.

I was recently in Roatan, Honduras, spending some time with friends and working on various projects.

One thing that stands out to me each time I’m there is how connected I am with the food.

Fresh bananas, plantains, coconuts and coconut oil, rice, beans, a variety of vegetables and fruits, and of course the freshest seafood you can imagine.

More incredible than the food I’m fortunate enough to enjoy while I’m in Honduras, is the process that each piece of food I ate, and will eat, goes through before it’s consumed.

Sacred Process

The soil, consisting of minerals accumulated throughout time, patiently prepares itself and awaits that sacred union, the falling of the seed onto its lush surface.

The seed drops, slowly sinking beneath the soil as the clouds above collect water at various spots. The clouds collect and collect until the weight of the water is too much and rain begins to fall.

Rain hits the top of the soil, just above the place the seed chose to rest. The soil soaks up the water falling from the heavens and the seed moistens.

The next day the clouds are gone, only blue skies are above as the abundant sun begins to rise. Through the day the sun reaches its pinnacle as the Earth turns, illuminating the soil, plants and life below.

The moist seed reaches for the sun, calling out for its light.

As the sun shines, the wisdom within the seed causes it to begin to open, revealing a new expression of itself through the union and cooperation of the soil, water, sun and seed.

A small green plant sprouts from the dark brown soil, unraveling and reaching towards the illuminating light above.

The life of the plant (vegetable or fruit) begins.

This same process (for the most part) happens for each vegetable and piece of fruit you eat. Connecting you with the water, sun, soil, seed and the hand or hands of the people who prepared the land, planted the seeds, harvested the crop, distributed and/or cooked the food for you.

All Unity

Being that I don’t consume any meat other than seafood, I followed this same trail back through the life of the fish that I am fortunate enough to replenish my body with.

First, I start with the sea, full of life, the manna of this planet.

The fish begin as seeds of possibility, eventually being birthed into this universe just as we are.

Beneath the waters they live, eat and have their being, eating plankton, eating from the reefs, consuming smaller fish, while dwelling in the safest places possible to keep themselves from being eaten.

From the smallest particle in the sea, to the largest whale, all the life in the ocean works together, keeping a harmonious balance of life and diversity.

The fisherman awakes one morning, climbs into his or her boat, and sets sail, hoping to catch some fish.

After hours of fishing, he or she returns with a good catch.

All the fish caught are a product of the Essence of Life that dwells within the water.

The fish are brought to land, purchased, prepared, cooked and then ate.

The entire universe is contained within each piece of seafood that strengthens my body.

Consuming this fish connects me with the ocean, the plankton, the reefs, other fish, the energy of the fisherman and the hands of the person or people who prepare and cook the fish.

You can trace this same process back through each piece of meat you buy, and I recommend you do so.

As you begin to recognize this sacred process, embracing the universe in each bite you eat, you will begin to see the importance of consuming foods that are as natural and organic as possible.

Yes, the entire universe goes into making a box of Frosted Flakes, a bag of Doritos, and energy drinks, but you can’t pick a Red Bull from a tree or pull up a box of cereal from the ground.

Cherish and honor the food you consume and it will cherish and honor you. (Three Key Tweeter)

Here are the 3 incredible ways to cherish and honor the food you eat:

1. Consume as many natural, organic fruits and vegetables as you can. Reconnect to the soil, the water, the seed and the sun. Feel the presence and harmony of the Universe in each bite you take.

2. Stay away from foods that are unnatural and contain ingredients that you would never find in nature. You can still recognize the Universe in these foods if you choose to eat them, but you must know that the majority of these foods don’t honor, respect or cherish your body.

3. Plant your own garden and witness the miraculous order of this abundant universe we are apart of. Nothing shows the importance of the term “You reap what you sow,” more than planting your own seeds, tending your garden, harvesting your crops, then eating what you’ve spent so much time loving, cherishing and honoring.

Above all else, be grateful for the food you are able to consume.
